How to wake up early without hating mornings

Waking up at 5 am is easy to admire and hard to force. Shift gradually, sleep enough and have a reason to get up.

Do not skip sleep to get up early

Getting up early only works if you go to bed earlier. If you cut sleep, you will quit within days.

A gradual plan

  1. Pick your target. For example 6:00 am instead of 7:30.
  2. Move 15 minutes at a time. Every three or four days, wake and sleep 15 minutes earlier.
  3. Move bedtime first. Set an alarm to begin winding down.
  4. Put the alarm across the room. You have to stand up to turn it off.
  5. Get light and water. Open the curtains and drink a glass of water.
  6. Have a reason. A walk, a book or a quiet cup of tea you look forward to.
  7. Keep weekends close. A big shift on Saturday undoes the week.

If you miss

Do not give up after one late morning. Return to the target the next day. Read how to stay consistent.
