How to start a journaling habit and keep it going

Journaling does not have to be pages of deep thoughts. A few honest lines at the same time each day is enough.

Start with one line

The biggest reason people quit journaling is aiming too high. Begin with one sentence a day. If you write more, good. If not, you still count.

Six steps

  1. Choose a time. After brushing your teeth, with morning tea or before bed.
  2. Keep the notebook visible. Or open the notes app straight from your tracker's reminder.
  3. Use one prompt. Pick from the list below.
  4. Write badly on purpose. No editing, no audience.
  5. Skip the catching up. Missed a day? Start fresh without a long entry.
  6. Re-read monthly. Patterns appear.

Simple prompts

  • One thing that went well today
  • One thing I would change
  • What am I grateful for?
  • What is my main task tomorrow?
  • How am I feeling, in three words?

Track it

Add a "Write one line" habit with an evening alarm, as in habit stacking. Jeevan keeps your habits and notes private from friends.
