The usual ways free apps limit you
- A habit cap. Often three to five habits, then a paywall.
- Hidden history. Streaks and statistics are locked after a few weeks.
- Locked reminders. More than one alarm needs a subscription.
- Paid social features. Friends or groups only on a paid plan.
- Ads. The app is free because you are the audience.
- Trial traps. Free for seven days, then it asks for a card.
A five-minute test before you commit
- Add the number of habits you really want, not just one.
- Set a reminder for each.
- Open the history or statistics screen.
- Look for a Premium or Upgrade prompt in settings.
- Read the store listing for in-app purchases and ads.
Why it matters for habits
A habit takes weeks or months to settle (see how long it takes). If the app locks features halfway through, you either pay or lose your history. Choose an app you can use fully for free from day one.
