Build an evening routine that makes tomorrow easier

Mornings go well when evenings do some of the work. Twenty minutes is enough.

Updated 4 November 2026 · 5 minute read

Five parts of a short evening routine

  1. Shut down work. Write what is unfinished and close the laptop. Decide when it ends.
  2. Plan tomorrow. Write the top three tasks.
  3. Reset your space. Ten minutes of tidying so you wake to order.
  4. Prepare. Clothes, bag, water bottle, workout kit.
  5. Wind down. Dim lights, no work messages, a book or stretching.

Make it stick

  • Link it to an anchor, such as dinner finishing (see habit stacking).
  • Use one alarm: "Start evening routine".
  • Keep it to 20 minutes. Short repeats beat long plans.
  • Track one habit rather than five.

A sample routine

  • 8:30 pm: write three tasks for tomorrow
  • 8:40 pm: tidy for ten minutes
  • 8:50 pm: prepare bag and clothes
  • 9:00 pm: stretch or read, phone away
